Same and different

Discover Mathematics: Chapter 1
GoalTell how two or three things are the same or different in size, shape and colour.
New words
same · alike in some waydifferent · not alikesize · how big or smallshape · the outline of a thing, like roundcolour · like red, yellow or green
Explanation

Look at things closely. Two things can be the same in one way and different in another. Think about size, shape and colour. A big football and a small football are the same shape, but they are different in size. A banana and a lemon are both yellow, but their shapes are different.

Worked examples
Two loaves of flatbread: one big and one small. Both are round, so the shape is the same. The size is different.
A banana and a lemon are both yellow, so the colour is the same. Their shapes are different.
A red apple and a red tomato are both round and both red. They are still two different things.
Class activity

Pairs game. A grown-up picks two things from the room, such as a spoon and a fork, or a sock and a glove. The child says one way they are the same and one way they are different. Then swap roles.
