Uzbekistan and the world
Independent Uzbekistan was recognised by the states of the world one after another. Uzbekistan cooperates with them on the basis of equality and mutual benefit. In the years of independence cooperation grew with Russia, China, South Korea, Japan and other Asian states and also with the USA, and many joint enterprises were opened. A car factory was built in Asaka with South Korea (1996), and later work was also done with General Motors. Russia and China are major trading partners of Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is a member of regional organizations. The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was formed in 1991; a number of former Soviet republics joined it, with the aim of keeping the earlier economic links. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) was formed in Shanghai in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan; it deals with security and cooperation. Uzbekistan also takes part in UN bodies such as UNESCO and UNICEF. The country put forward a policy of not joining any military-political bloc and not hosting other states’ military bases. Over the years of independence cooperation among states has also widened to trade, education and culture.
