Explanation

We review the topics learned during the year. For natural numbers we recall the order of operations and the laws for convenient calculation. In an equation we find the unknown using the components of operations. The area of a rectangle is S = a · b, the volume of a parallelepiped is V = a · b · c, the surface of a cube is 6a². We can compare, add and subtract common fractions and find a part of a number. In decimals, operations are done carefully with the point, and numbers can be rounded. Percent is one hundredth. A data series is analysed with the mean, range, median and mode. Always check your answer.

Worked examples
Equation 6x − 25 = 59: 6x = 84, x = 14. A room 8 m by 5 m by 3 m: V = 120 m³; floor area 8 · 5 = 40 m².
A price of 40 000 so‘m is reduced by 25%: 40 000 : 100 · 25 = 10 000; new price 30 000 so‘m. 3/8 + 2/8 = 5/8; 0.6 · 0.5 = 0.3.
Class activity

“End of year”: choose one favourite problem from each chapter (natural numbers, geometry, common fractions, solids, decimals, data), make it up again with new numbers and solve it.

Practice
1
Calculate (84 + 36) : 12.
2
Find 3/5 of 45.
3
