Solving real-life problems
Textbook: Part 4, lesson 115, pp. 16–18
GoalUse formulas and units in real-life problems; the old units pud and funt.
New words
pud (old unit of mass) · pudfunt (old unit of mass) · funtsack · qopvolume · hajm
Explanation
In the past mass was measured in pud and funt: 1 funt = 400 g, 1 pud = 16 kg. In a real-life problem first choose the formula you need (P, S, V or a = b × c + r), then write all quantities in the same unit. For goods packed in sacks, add the leftover part to the weight of the full sacks.
Worked examples
3 pud = 16 × 3 = 48 kg; 7 funt = 400 × 7 = 2 800 g.
A farmer collected 30 full sacks of 25 kg and 9 kg more carrots. In total 25 × 30 + 9 = 759 kg.
Class activity
“Old scales”: children write the value of 1 pud and 1 funt in kg and g, convert three numbers of their choice from pud and funt into kg and g, and check in pairs.
Practice
1
How many kilograms are 4 pud?
64
2
How many grams are 15 funt?
6000
3
How many funt are in 2 pud? (1 pud = 16 kg, 1 funt = 400 g)
80
4
A wooden box is 40 cm long, 30 cm wide and 2 dm high. What is its volume in cm³?
24000
5
A farmer packed carrots into 20 kg sacks: 36 sacks were filled and 8 kg were left. How many kg of carrots did he collect?
