Tonnes and centners
Textbook: Part 3, lesson 70, pp. 7–9
GoalMeasure large masses in centners and tonnes: 1 centner = 100 kg, 1 t = 1 000 kg, 1 t = 10 centners.
New words
tonne · tonna (t)centner (100 kg) · sentner (s)cargo · yuktruck · yuk mashinasi
Explanation
The mass of heavy loads is measured in larger units: the centner and the tonne. 1 centner = 100 kg, 1 t = 1 000 kg, so 1 t = 10 centners. In the textbook the centner is also written with the letter “q”. Going from a big unit to a small one we multiply; going from a small unit to a big one we divide.
Worked examples
6 t = 6 000 kg; 8 centners = 800 kg; 4 600 kg = 46 centners.
4 t 5 centners 30 kg = 4 000 kg + 500 kg + 30 kg = 4 530 kg.
Class activity
“The truck”: cards show 3 t, 40 centners, 2 500 kg, 6 centners. Children line up in order of increasing mass and check by changing to kg.
