Explanation
We have learned to divide a sum, to divide with a remainder, to use long division (also with a zero in the middle) and to divide numbers ending in zeros. Division can always be checked by the inverse operation: divisor × quotient + remainder = dividend.
Worked examples
(240 + 360) : 6 = 40 + 60 = 100.
125 : 8 = 15 (remainder 5), because 8 × 15 = 120 and 125 − 120 = 5.
Class activity
“Division stations”: five stations in the classroom (sum, remainder, long division, zero in the middle, round numbers). Groups solve one example at each station and collect a card.
