Long division

Textbook: Part 2, lesson 44, pp. 16–18
GoalLong division: dividing a multi-digit number by a one-digit number in writing.
New words

Explanation

In long division the dividend is written to the left of the corner, the divisor goes inside the corner, and the quotient appears under the divisor. We start from the biggest place, the left one: divide each digit by the divisor and write the quotient digit. If nothing is left over, move to the next digit. 6 939 : 3: 6 : 3 = 2, 9 : 3 = 3, 3 : 3 = 1, 9 : 3 = 3. The quotient is 2 313.

Worked examples
6 486 : 2: 6 : 2 = 3, 4 : 2 = 2, 8 : 2 = 4, 6 : 2 = 3. The quotient is 3 243. Check: 3 243 × 2 = 6 486.
4 628 : 2: 4 : 2 = 2, 6 : 2 = 3, 2 : 2 = 1, 8 : 2 = 4. The quotient is 2 314.
Class activity

“Draw the corner”: children write 693 : 3 as a long division in their notebooks, say every step aloud and then check by multiplying.
