The October seizure of power and the Turkestan Autonomy
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Describe the events in Tashkent of 28 October – 1 November 1917 in 4–5 sentences.
The Bolshevik-led Tashkent Soviet began an uprising; after four days of fighting Soviet power was set up in the new city; the local population hardly took part.
2
Show the composition of the Turkestan SNK (by seats) in a table and explain why this government did not represent the Muslim population.
Left SRs – 8; Bolsheviks and maximalists – 7; local members – 0. Most of the population were local peoples, who were absent from the government.
3
List the things the Autonomy government carried out or planned (at least 4).
Publishing newspapers, preparing a constitution, forming a national army, an internal loan, bringing grain against famine.
4
Convert 30 January 1918 (old style) to the new style and explain why the textbook gives dates in two systems.
12 February (new style). Because in 1918 Russia adopted the Gregorian calendar: 31 January was followed directly by 14 February, removing the 13-day difference.
5
Write 5–6 sentences on “The Turkestan Autonomy as historical experience”: what did it show and why did it not last?
Sample: it showed local intellectuals’ aspiration to their own statehood; but it was suppressed because of a lack of a strong army, funds and unity, and the military superiority of the other side.
