Explanation
Multiplying a fraction by a whole number is repeated addition. 3 × 2/5 means 2/5 + 2/5 + 2/5. Three groups of 2 fifths make 6 fifths, so 3 × 2/5 = 6/5 = 1 1/5. The pieces are still fifths, so only the numerator is multiplied: 3 × 2 = 6, and the denominator stays 5. We never multiply the denominator, because the size of the pieces does not change. If the product is bigger than the denominator we can write it as a mixed number: 6 × 3/4 = 18/4 = 4 2/4. In a story, find how many equal groups there are and how much is in each group. A jug pours 3/4 of a litre into each of 4 glasses: 4 × 3/4 = 12/4 = 3 litres.
Worked examples
Find 3 × 2/5. It is 2/5 + 2/5 + 2/5 = 6/5. Multiply the numerator: 3 × 2 = 6, keep the denominator 5. The product is 6/5 = 1 1/5.
A jug pours 3/4 litre into each of 4 glasses. 4 × 3/4 = 12/4 = 3 litres in all. Check: 12 quarters make 3 wholes.
Find 6 × 3/4. 6 × 3 = 18, so the product is 18/4. 18/4 = 16/4 + 2/4 = 4 + 2/4 = 4 2/4.
Class activity
Pour and measure. Use a measuring jug. Pour 1/4 litre four times, then 1/2 litre three times. Write each as a multiplication of a fraction by a whole number and check the total in the jug.
Practice
1
Find 3 × 1/8.
3 × 1 = 3, so 3/8.
2
Find 4 × 2/5 and write it as a mixed number.
4 × 2 = 8, so 8/5 = 1 3/5.
3
Find 5 × 3/10 and write it as a mixed number.
5 × 3 = 15, so 15/10 = 10/10 + 5/10 = 1 5/10.

Salma walks 3/4 km each day for 6 days. How far does she walk in all?
6 × 3/4 = 18/4 = 4 2/4 km.
5
Aya says 3 × 2/5 = 6/15. What is wrong? Give the right product.
She also multiplied the denominator, but the pieces are still fifths. 3 × 2/5 = 6/5 = 1 1/5.
