Factor pairs, primes and composites
Discover Mathematics P4: Term 1, Unit 6, Lessons 1–6
GoalFind all the factors of a number in pairs and tell prime numbers from composite numbers.
New words
factor · a number that divides another number exactly, with nothing left overfactor pair · two factors that multiply to give the number, such as 3 and 4 for 12prime number · a number with exactly two factors: 1 and itselfcomposite number · a number with more than two factors
Explanation
A factor of a number divides it exactly. To find all the factors of 12, look for pairs that multiply to 12: 1 × 12, 2 × 6 and 3 × 4. So the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12. Test the numbers in order, 1, 2, 3 and so on, and stop when the pairs start to repeat. An array also shows a factor pair: 12 dots can make 1 row of 12, 2 rows of 6 or 3 rows of 4. A prime number has exactly two factors, 1 and itself: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23 and 29 are prime. A composite number has three or more factors, like 12. The number 1 has only one factor, so it is neither prime nor composite. Be careful: 2 is the only even prime number.

Find the factors of 18. Pairs: 1 × 18, 2 × 9, 3 × 6. The next number, 4, does not divide 18, and 5 does not either. So the factors are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 18.
Is 29 prime? Try 2, 3 and 5. None of them divides 29 exactly, and 6 × 6 = 36 is already more than 29. So 29 has only the factors 1 and 29. It is prime.

Is 51 prime? It looks like it could be, but 3 × 17 = 51. So 51 has the factors 1, 3, 17 and 51. It is composite.
Class activity
Factor hunt with beans. Take 12 beans and make all the rectangles you can: 1 by 12, 2 by 6 and 3 by 4. Try 13 beans. How many rectangles can you make? What does that tell you about 13?
Practice
1
List all the factors of 20.
1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20.
2
List all the factors of 36.
1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36.
3
Which of these are prime: 9, 13, 21, 23, 27?
13 and 23. (9 = 3 × 3, 21 = 3 × 7, 27 = 3 × 9.)
4
Is 1 prime or composite? Explain.
Neither. It has only one factor, 1.
5
Hana says all odd numbers are prime. Find a number that shows she is wrong.
For example 9: 3 × 3 = 9, so 9 has three factors (1, 3, 9) and is composite.
