equivalent · having the same valuemissing number · the number we must find to make two fractions equalsimplify · to divide the numerator and denominator by the same number to get smaller numbers
Explanation
Two fractions with different numbers can have the same value, such as 2/5 and 4/10. To find a missing number, look at how the known numbers changed. In 2/5 = ?/10, the denominator went from 5 to 10, so it was multiplied by 2. We must multiply the numerator by 2 too: 2 × 2 = 4. So 2/5 = 4/10. In 3/4 = 9/?, the numerator went from 3 to 9, which is × 3, so the denominator is 4 × 3 = 12. We can also go the other way by dividing: 9/12 = 3/4 because 9 ÷ 3 = 3 and 12 ÷ 3 = 4. The rule is always the same: whatever you do to the top, you do to the bottom. Check with a bar or by dividing back.

2/5 = ?/10
5 × 2 = 10
2 × 2 = 4
3/4 = 9/?
3 × 3 = 9
4 × 3 = 12
9/12 = ?/4
12 ÷ 3 = 4
9 ÷ 3 = 3
Worked examples
Find 2/5 = ?/10. The denominator was multiplied by 2, so multiply the numerator by 2: 2 × 2 = 4. Answer: 2/5 = 4/10.
Simplify 9/12. Divide the numerator and the denominator by 3: 9 ÷ 3 = 3 and 12 ÷ 3 = 4. So 9/12 = 3/4. Check: 3 × 3 = 9 and 4 × 3 = 12.
Class activity
Fraction match. Write pairs of equivalent fractions on cards (such as 1/3 and 4/12) and one card with a number hidden. Turn the cards face down, find pairs and say what was multiplied.
Practice
1
Find the missing number: 4/5 = ?/10.
5 × 2 = 10, so 4 × 2 = 8. 4/5 = 8/10.
2
Find the missing number: 3/8 = 9/?.
3 × 3 = 9, so 8 × 3 = 24. 3/8 = 9/24.
3
Simplify 10/15.
Divide by 5: 10 ÷ 5 = 2 and 15 ÷ 5 = 3. 10/15 = 2/3.
4
Which is the same amount as 2/3 of a pizza: 4/6 or 3/6?
4/6, because 2 × 2 = 4 and 3 × 2 = 6.
5
Nour says 3/5 = 6/12 because she doubled the numerator and added 7 to the denominator. What is wrong? Find the right missing number.
The same operation must be done to both numbers. If the numerator is doubled, the denominator is doubled too: 3/5 = 6/10.
