Phonics: i-e
Connect P2 Term 2: Unit 10
GoalHear and read the long i sound in words like line and nine.
New words
line · a long thin marknine · the number after eightkite · a toy that flies in the windbike · a bicycleslide · a play seat you go down
Explanation
The letter i can say its own name, like the word eye. This happens when we write i, then one letter, then e at the end: i-e. The e is silent. Compare: kit has a short i, but kite has a long i. Say: i-e, i-e, kite.
Worked examples
Listen and say. Find i-e.
Dina is nine. She likes to ride her bike. She sees five kites in the sky. She walks in a line with her friends. They smile.
| short i | long i (i-e) |
|---|---|
| kit | kite |
| pin | pine |
| bit | bite |
Now you. Say a word with i-e. Say a word with a short i.
