The distance between two points and the midpoint of a segment in space

Pure Mathematics Sec 3 Term 1, Unit 3, Lessons 1–2
GoalFind the distance between two points in space and the midpoint of the segment joining them.
New words
distance formula · AB = √((x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)² + (z₂ − z₁)²)midpoint · the point halfway along AB; each of its coordinates is the average of the two coordinatesspace diagonal · the diagonal of a box that joins two opposite corners
Explanation

Take a box with edges a, b and c. The diagonal of its base has length √(a² + b²) by Pythagoras. That diagonal and the vertical edge c form a right angle, so the space diagonal has length √(a² + b² + c²). For the box in the picture, √(4 + 9 + 36) = 7. Any two points A(x₁, y₁, z₁) and B(x₂, y₂, z₂) are opposite corners of such a box whose edges are the differences of the coordinates, so AB = √((x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)² + (z₂ − z₁)²). The order of the points does not matter because the differences are squared. The midpoint M of AB is found by averaging each coordinate: M = ((x₁ + x₂)/2, (y₁ + y₂)/2, (z₁ + z₂)/2). If M and one end are known, the other end is 2M − A (double M’s coordinates, then subtract A’s). To show a triangle is right-angled, square the three sides and test the Pythagoras relation: the largest square must equal the sum of the other two.

Worked examples
Find the distance between A(1, 2, 3) and B(4, 6, 15). The differences are 3, 4, 12, so AB = √(9 + 16 + 144) = √169 = 13.
Show that A(4, 2, 1), B(2, 1, −1) and C(3, −1, −1) form a right-angled triangle, and find its area. AB² = 4 + 1 + 4 = 9, BC² = 1 + 4 + 0 = 5, AC² = 1 + 9 + 4 = 14. Since 9 + 5 = 14, the angle at B is a right angle. The area is ½ × AB × BC = ½ × 3 × √5 = 3√5/2.
Midpoints. The midpoint of A(3, −4, 7) and B(−1, 2, 1) is ((3 − 1)/2, (−4 + 2)/2, (7 + 1)/2) = (1, −1, 4). If M(2, 1, −3) is the midpoint of AB and A is (5, −2, 4), then B = 2M − A = (4 − 5, 2 + 2, −6 − 4) = (−1, 4, −10).
Class activity

Real boxes. Measure the length, width and height of a book or a cupboard in cm. Calculate its space diagonal with the formula, then check with a string stretched from one corner to the opposite corner.
