The equation of a plane from a point and a normal vector: vector, standard and general forms
Pure Mathematics Sec 3 Term 1, Unit 4, Lessons 1–2
GoalWrite the equation of a plane through a given point with a given normal vector in vector, standard and general form.
New words
normal vector · a non-zero vector perpendicular to the plane; any non-zero multiple of it is also a normal vectorvector equation of a plane · n · r = n · A, with A a point of the plane and n a normal vectorgeneral form · ax + by + cz + d = 0, where (a, b, c) is a normal vector
Explanation
A plane is fixed by one point A of it and one direction perpendicular to it. A normal vector n is any non-zero vector perpendicular to the plane (in Arabic المتجه العمودي على المستوى). A point P with position vector r lies in the plane exactly when AP is perpendicular to n, that is n · (r − A) = 0, so n · r = n · A. This is the vector equation of the plane. With n = (a, b, c), A = (x₁, y₁, z₁) and r = (x, y, z), it reads a(x − x₁) + b(y − y₁) + c(z − z₁) = 0, the standard form. Multiplying out gives ax + by + cz + d = 0 with d = −(ax₁ + by₁ + cz₁), the general form. In the general form the coefficients of x, y and z are the components of a normal vector. They are not changed by multiplying the whole equation by a number. To test whether a point is in the plane, put its coordinates into the equation. Special planes: z = k has normal (0, 0, 1) and is parallel to the xy-plane; if the coefficient of y is 0, as in 5x + 2z = 10, the normal has b = 0, and the plane is parallel to the y-axis. A plane has no 'slope'; the normal vector is what tells us its tilt.
form
the plane through (1, −2, 4) with normal (2, −3, 1)
vector
(2, −3, 1) · r = 12
standard
2(x − 1) − 3(y + 2) + (z − 4) = 0
general
2x − 3y + z − 12 = 0
Worked examples
Plane through (1, −2, 4) with n = (2, −3, 1). Vector form: n · r = 2 × 1 + (−3)(−2) + 1 × 4 = 12. Standard form: 2(x − 1) − 3(y + 2) + (z − 4) = 0. General form: 2x − 3y + z − 12 = 0.
Plane through P(2, 0, −1) with n = (1, 4, −2). n · P = 2 + 0 + 2 = 4, so x + 4y − 2z = 4, or x + 4y − 2z − 4 = 0. Check P: 2 + 0 + 2 = 4.
Is (4, −2, −2) on the plane 2x − 3y + z = 12? 8 + 6 − 2 = 12: yes. Is (3, 2, 0)? 6 − 6 + 0 = 0 ≠ 12: no.
Reading a normal vector. For 5x + 2z = 10 the normal is (5, 0, 2); it has no y-part, so the plane is parallel to the y-axis. For z = 4 the normal is (0, 0, 1), the plane is horizontal.
Class activity
A plane from a sheet of paper. Hold a sheet of paper flat and a pencil upright on it: the pencil is a normal vector. Tilt the sheet and keep the pencil upright on it. What changes in the equation when the sheet is tilted? (The normal vector, that is a, b, c.)
Practice
1
Write the equation of the plane through (3, −1, 2) with normal vector (1, 1, −4).
n · A = 3 − 1 − 8 = −6, so x + y − 4z = −6, that is x + y − 4z + 6 = 0.
2
Find the plane through (2, 5, 3) with normal vector (0, 0, 1).
n · A = 3, so z = 3, a horizontal plane.
3
A plane has the equation 4x − y + 2z = 7. Give a normal vector and test whether (1, 1, 2) lies on it.
A normal vector is (4, −1, 2). For (1, 1, 2): 4 − 1 + 4 = 7, so yes.
4
Find the plane through the origin with normal vector (2, −1, −2).
The right side is n · O = 0, so 2x − y − 2z = 0.
5
Find the plane through (−2, 4, 0) that is perpendicular to the line through A(1, 1, 1) and B(3, 0, −3).
The direction AB = (2, −1, −4) is a normal vector. n · P = −4 − 4 + 0 = −8, so 2x − y − 4z = −8, that is 2x − y − 4z + 8 = 0.
