English Secondary 1 Term 1, Unit 6 Lesson 5: pp. 90–91
GoalWrite your own first CV with a personal statement, education, activities with action verbs, skills and languages.
New words
statement · two or three sentences about yourselfaction verb · a strong verb that shows what you did, such as organisedskills · things that you can do wellobjective · what you want to achieveanalyse · to look closely at something to understand itresponsible · able to be trusted to do your duty
Explanation
Write your first CV in clear steps. Step 1: at the top write your name and your city (for practice, no phone number, email or address). Step 2: write a personal statement of two sentences: who you are and what you look for. Step 3: education: your school and your best subjects. Step 4: activities and volunteering: begin each line with an action verb in the past simple and add a fact or a number: Organised books for younger children every Saturday. Step 5: skills and languages: use short noun phrases (clear speaking, teamwork, careful counting). Use complete, clear sentences in the personal statement and short lines in the lists. Choose British spelling (organised) or American spelling (organized) and use the same one everywhere. References are optional at your age. Read your CV aloud, then check every verb and every capital letter.
Section
Example line
Personal statement
I am a careful student who enjoys helping others.
Activity
Helped younger children to find books.
Skill
clear speaking; teamwork
Language
Arabic (first language); English (good)
Worked examples
Compare two ways to say the same thing. Note style: “books, kids, Saturdays.” Better: “Organised books and helped younger children every Saturday.” The second one starts with an action verb and gives a full idea.
Action verbs for a first CV: managed, organised, helped, led, created, collaborated, assisted. For example: Collaborated with three classmates to make a poster for the school fair.
Noun phrases for skills: clear speaking, careful counting, good listening, teamwork. They are short and do not need a verb.
Mistake check: “I am responsible, hard working and I am a team player and love to doing work.” The sentence is too long and has an error. A better version: I am responsible and hard-working, and I enjoy teamwork.
Class activity
My first CV. Write your own first CV on one page. Use the five sections: name and city, personal statement (two sentences), education, activities with at least two action verbs, and skills and languages. Do not write an address, phone number, email or link. Ask a grown-up to read it and to say what is clear and what is missing.
Practice
1
Rewrite in a better way: “Library, books, Saturdays.”
For example: Organised returned books at the library every Saturday.
2
Choose the action verb in the past simple: ___ a team of four students in the garden project. (Led / Leader / Leading)
Led. A past simple action verb is needed.
3
Write a two-sentence personal statement for a fifteen-year-old who wants a summer helper job.
For example: I am a reliable student who enjoys helping children. I am looking for a summer job at a library or a school event.
4
Which line is a skill? (a) Garden Hills Secondary School (b) clear speaking (c) 2025
(b) clear speaking.
5
Why should a CV be only one page?
It is easier to scan, and it keeps only the most important facts.
