Review 2: words and grammar
Use this lesson as a checklist for the whole term. Verbs: decide, want, afford, refuse and manage take to + base verb; enjoy, avoid, finish and suggest take -ing; remember, stop and try change meaning. After a preposition use -ing. Nouns: many and a few with countable nouns; much and a little with uncountable nouns; a lot of with both; few and little mean almost none. Never say an advice; say a piece of advice. Articles: a or an for a first mention or a job, by sound (an hour, a university); the for a second mention, one of its kind and superlatives; no article for general plurals, meals, sports and most names of places. Tenses and modals: past continuous for an action in progress (while, when), mustn’t for not allowed, don’t have to for not necessary. Conditionals: zero for facts, first for real future possibilities and second for unreal situations, with no will or would in the if-clause. In a gap exercise, check the kind of word first, then the clue.

Mini test. Write six gap sentences of your own, one for each: a verb pattern, a quantifier, an article, a past continuous, a modal and a conditional. Give them to a friend or a grown-up to solve, then check the answers together.
