Numbers that help us
Discover Term 2: Axis 4, Chapter 2
GoalChoose the number that fits, and keep important numbers safe in my head.
New words
fit · to be right for somethingby heart · remembered so well that we do not need to look
Explanation
Numbers help us in many places. They help us find the right bus, pay the right price, come to school on time and know if a day is hot. We can also learn important numbers by heart, like our house number and the phone number of a grown-up. At school we find numbers on the clock, the calendar, the classroom door and the pages of books. We think: which number fits? School starts at 8:00, not at 80 kg.
Worked examples
| sentence | number |
|---|---|
| Today is very hot: ___ | 35 degrees |
| School starts at ___ | 8:00 |
| Mum buys ___ of rice | 2 kg |
| The toy costs ___ | 10 pounds |
Jana knows her mum’s phone number by heart. If she is lost, a helper can call it.
On a page in a book, the page number tells us where we are.
Class activity
Number hunt at school: with a friend, find numbers in two places at school (a clock, a door, a calendar or a book). Draw each place, write the number and say what it tells.
