Review: making, buying and saving
Discover Term 2: Axes 3–4
GoalRemember where products come from, the difference between needs and wants, and how we pay and save.
New words
product · something that people makesaving · keeping some money aside to use later
Explanation
Let us remember how things come to us. A wooden chair is made from wood, and wood comes from trees. A woolly scarf is made from wool, and wool comes from sheep. Salt comes from the ground. Products are made in steps, and we say first, next and last. Needs are things we must have, like water. Wants are nice to have, like a toy. When we buy something, we pay the price in pounds. We buy our needs first, and we save a little at a time.
Worked examples
Bees make honey. A beekeeper puts it in a jar, and a shop sells it.
Water and bread are needs. A video game and a lollipop are wants.
Mariam has 5 coins. A notebook costs 3 coins. She buys the notebook, a need, and saves the 2 coins that are left.
Class activity
Review game: with a grown-up, choose a product at home, such as a pencil, bread or a T-shirt. Say what it is made of, where each material comes from, and one step in making it. Then say if you need it or want it.
