Helpers at home
Discover Term 2: Axis 3, Chapter 1
GoalSay what some devices at home do for us, and use them safely.
New words
device · a machine that does a job for uselectricity · power that makes many devices work; never touch sockets
Explanation
Devices help us at home every day. A washing machine cleans our clothes. A cooker heats our food. A fan or an air conditioner cools the air on a hot day. A fridge keeps food and drinks cold and fresh. A phone or a computer helps us find information. Many devices use electricity. Electricity is strong, so only grown-ups plug things in. Never touch sockets or hot cookers.
Worked examples
After football, Omar’s shirt is dirty. The washing machine cleans it.
Mum heats lunch on the cooker. A grown-up does this, because it is hot.
Nour looks for pictures of camels on a computer with her teacher.
Class activity
Device match: with a grown-up, walk round your home and find four devices. Draw each one and write or say its job: cleaning, heating, cooling, keeping food fresh or finding information. Remember: do not touch plugs or hot things.
