Review: past tenses, vocabulary and a story
First the tenses. Use the past simple for finished actions (She found a bag) and the past continuous for an action in progress (She was walking to the library). Use while with the long action and when with the short one. Now vocabulary: read each sentence, guess the missing word from the context and choose the best option. Then the story. After you read a story, ask three questions: What happened? How do the people feel? What value does the story show (honesty, respect, perseverance)? Answer with a short sentence and give a reason with because. A true answer is based on the text, not on your guess. Use words from our review: honest, private, courage, empathy.
| Tense | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Past simple | verb + -ed / irregular | She found a bag. |
| Past continuous | was / were + -ing | She was walking to the library. |
| Both together | while / when | While she was walking, she found a bag. |
Mina was walking to the library when she saw a small bag under a bench. Inside were some notebooks and a pencil case with a name on it. Mina wanted to open the notebooks, but she did not, because they were private. While she was thinking, the school bell rang. She took the bag to the teacher’s office. Later a girl came in and she was a little worried. When she saw her bag, she smiled and said thank you. The teacher said, “Honesty is a kind of courage.” That day Mina learned that doing the right thing feels good.
Values talk. With a grown-up talk about the story: Why is honesty a kind of courage? What would you do if you found something that is not yours? Write two sentences with because.
