Active and passive footprints: reading and word study
Read the text on page 32 of your book (about two kinds of footprints). Then read our short text. When you write a comment, you leave an active footprint, because you chose to share it. A passive footprint is data that is collected about you without you typing anything, for example which pages you visit. Some websites collect this data to decide which adverts to show. Information can stay online for a long time, so think before you post. Together, your active and passive footprints build your online identity. You can protect yourself: use privacy settings, ask a trusted adult for help, and read what an app asks before you accept. To check the meaning of a word, look it up in a dictionary and also look for its synonyms and antonyms.
| Kind | How it is made | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Active footprint | You share it on purpose. | A comment you write |
| Passive footprint | It is collected without you typing it. | The pages you visit |

Footprint sort. Write ten online actions on small cards (post a photo, write a comment, visit a page, search for a word…). Sort them into active and passive footprints, and explain two of your choices to a grown-up.
