Where irrigation wastes water

Science P6: Term 2, Unit 4, pp. 80–86
GoalFind where irrigation wastes water and compare flood, sprinkler and drip systems.
New words
irrigation · giving water to cropsrunoff · water that flows away over the groundmoisture sensor · a device that measures how wet the soil is
Explanation

Irrigation brings water from a source to the plants. Every system has a way to take the water from the source, a way to move it to the field and a way to apply it to the crops. Water is wasted in several ways. Some evaporates into the air, especially in hot sun. Some runs off the soil before it soaks in. Some leaks from cracked pipes or channels. And sometimes people simply water more than the plants need. Old flood irrigation lets water run over the whole field, so a lot may be lost. A sprinkler sprays water into the air, which is better but some evaporates. Drip irrigation lets small drops fall by the roots, so little is wasted. A moisture sensor can tell people when the soil is dry. Watering in the cooler morning or evening also reduces evaporation.

SystemHow it worksWhere water is lost
floodwater runs over the fieldevaporation, runoff
sprinklersprays water into the airsome evaporation and wind
dripdrops fall by the rootsvery little
Worked examples
A gardener waters at noon on a hot day. Much of the water evaporates before it soaks in. Watering in the evening would waste less.

A pipe has a crack and drips all night. This is a leak. Repairing it saves water.
Jana says drip irrigation wastes more than flood irrigation. Wrong: drip puts the water just where the roots are.
Class activity

Sketch and label. With a grown-up, draw three simple sketches of a flood, a sprinkler and a drip system. Label the water source, pipes and plants. Mark with a red pencil where water might be lost. Which system would you choose for a small garden?

Practice
1
Name three ways irrigation wastes water.
2
Which irrigation system lets water run over the whole field?
3
What does a moisture sensor measure?
4
Why water in the cool morning or evening?
