Mountains and rain: the rain shadow

Science P6: Term 2, Unit 3, pp. 20–25
GoalExplain how mountains can make one side wet and the other side dry, called a rain shadow.
New words
rain shadow · a dry area on the far side of a mountainwindward · the side of a mountain that faces the windpressure · how strongly the air pushes
Explanation

Imagine moist air from the sea blowing toward a mountain range. The mountain forces the air to rise. As it climbs, the pressure around it falls, so it spreads out and cools. Higher up the air is also thinner. Cooler air cannot hold as much water vapour, so the vapour condenses into cloud droplets and rain or snow falls on the windward side of the mountain. By the time the air goes over the top it has lost much of its water. It sinks on the other side, warms up and is dry. So the far side gets little rain, and we call this area the rain shadow. Many dry lands lie in a rain shadow. A desert usually gets about 250 mm of rain a year or less.

Mariam’s book stands open on a table like a tent. A grown-up sprays a fine mist from one side. The side facing the spray gets wet and the other stays dry. It is a model of a rain shadow.

Faris climbs up a mountain with his uncle and notices the air getting cooler and thinner. Higher up, the air pressure is lower.
Omar wonders: do all deserts come from rain shadows? No. Some deserts are dry for other reasons, such as sinking dry air.
Class activity

Rain shadow model. With a grown-up, stand an open book on a table like a tent. Spray a gentle mist from one side with a clean spray bottle, keeping the paper away from the water. Check the two sides after one minute, and then draw the model with arrows for the moist air.

Practice
1
What forces the moist air to rise?
2
Why does the air cool as it rises?
3
Which side gets less rain, the windward side or the far side?
4
About how much rain do deserts get in a year?
