A before-and-after table for a metal

Science P6: Term 1, Chapter 10, pp. 82–85
GoalComplete a before-and-after table for a metal and for a safe home reaction.
New words
before · how something is at the start of a testafter · how something is at the end of a testevidence · what we see that supports an idea
Explanation

Scientists record changes in a table. A before-and-after table has columns for how things look before, what happens during, and what we find after. For the metal and acid test, before: a shiny metal and a clear acid. During: bubbles of gas. After: the liquid dries to a white solid that is dull and does not bubble in acid. The evidence for a new substance is the change in looks and in how it behaves. In the baking soda and vinegar test, before: a white powder and a clear liquid. During: bubbles. After: a liquid with no powder left. We use the table to compare, to explain, and to check that we answered our question. Good tables are neat, have a title and use words like shiny, dull and bubbles.

Farida fills in a table for the coin in vinegar. Before: a dull coin. During: nothing much to see. After: a brighter coin.
Seif says the table must say what we saw, not what we think. For example write bubbles rise, not the acid is angry.

Malak compares the two tests. In both, bubbles appeared and something new was made. But only one used a metal.
Class activity

My own table. Draw a table with the headings before, during and after. Fill it in for the baking soda and vinegar cup or for the coin in vinegar. Add one line about what the table shows.

Practice
1
What are three headings of a good before-and-after table?
2
In the metal and acid test, what do we see after?
3
Name one piece of evidence for a new substance.
4
Why should a table say what we saw?
