Review: code, problems and my exhibition

ICT P6 Term 2, Theme 3: pp. 38–39
GoalReview code, digital problems and picture editing, and plan an exhibition about digital communication tools.
New words
exhibition · a display of pictures and writing for others to look atlabel · a few words that name a thing in a picturecaption · a sentence under a picture that explains itresponsible digital citizen · a person who uses digital tools safely, fairly and kindly
Explanation

The last part of the review brings together Weeks 21 and 22 and the whole theme. HTML is a language that people often use to make web pages, and it makes static content; a language such as JavaScript can make a page change as the user acts. Common problems have first fixes: a corrupted file, a device that will not charge, a forgotten password, a deleted file and a saving error. A photo editing program changes pictures with retouching, blending and filters; layers are like sheets of tracing paper, and an honest editor says what was changed. Now plan an exhibition about digital communication tools. An exhibition shows ideas with pictures, labels and captions. A label names something: ‘microphone’. A caption explains it: ‘Mute the microphone when you are not speaking.’ Finish with a sentence of your own: ‘I act as a responsible digital citizen when I…’, and give a reason.

Worked examples
A problem and a fix. Hana’s file will not save, and the message says the name is used. She types a new name that says what the file is, and it saves. The fix was simple because she read the message.
An exhibition plan on paper. Seven panels are drawn in a row: tools available, how a video meeting starts, rules for the microphone, rules for the link, a pretend meeting, a problem and its fix, and my essential sentence.

An essential sentence. Salma writes: ‘I act as a responsible digital citizen when I check facts, I credit sources and I ask a grown-up before I share a link.’ Her reasons are actions she can really do.
Class activity

My exhibition. Draw six panels on one big sheet or six small cards about digital communication tools. Give each panel a picture, a label and a caption, and use no real photographs of people. Leave one panel for your essential sentence. Then add a ‘problem and fix’ panel with a digital problem from this term and one first fix. Walk a partner through your exhibition in one minute.

Practice
1
What is HTML?
2
Name a kind of program that edits pictures, without using a brand name.
3
What is the difference between a label and a caption?
4
Name a common digital problem and one first fix.
