GoalAdd prices to find a total and keep inside a budget of 500 LE.
New words
price · how many pounds something coststotal · all the prices added togetherbudget · the most money you plan to spend
Explanation
A price tells how many pounds something costs. To find the total, add the prices. A doll costs 29 LE and a ball costs 18 LE. Add the tens: 20 + 10 = 30. Add the ones: 9 + 8 = 17. Then 30 + 17 = 47. The total is 47 LE. A budget is the most money you plan to spend. If your budget is 500 LE, everything you buy must cost 500 LE or less in all. Add one price at a time and keep a running total.
Worked examples
A book costs 27 LE and a pencil case costs 16 LE. 27 + 16: 20 + 10 = 30 and 7 + 6 = 13, so the total is 43 LE.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Scooter | 134 LE |
| Backpack | 292 LE |
| Total | 426 LE |
Nour wants a coat for 345 LE and boots for 440 LE. 345 + 440 = 785. That is more than her budget of 500 LE, so she cannot buy both.
Class activity
Class shop. Write 8 things on small cards with prices from 3 LE to 300 LE. Each player has a budget of 500 LE. Pick three cards, add the prices one at a time, and say if you stay inside your budget. How much is left?
Practice
1
A kite costs 68 LE and a toy costs 45 LE. What is the total?
68 + 45 = 113, so 113 LE.
2
A box of crayons costs 14 LE and a sharpener costs 4 LE. How much do they cost together?
14 + 4 = 18, so 18 LE.
3
Mariam buys snacks for 17 LE, a ruler for 8 LE and stickers for 6 LE. How much does she pay?
17 + 8 = 25 and 25 + 6 = 31, so 31 LE.
4
Mina has 500 LE. She buys a puzzle for 108 LE and a scarf for 64 LE. How much does she spend, and how much is left?
108 + 64 = 172. She spends 172 LE. 500 − 172 = 328, so 328 LE is left.
5
