Discover Mathematics P2: Term 2, Lessons 61–120
GoalReview banknotes in LE, even and odd numbers, doubling, patterns and arrays.
New words
banknote · paper money; its number is its value in LEeven / odd · even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8; odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7, 9rule · what changes in a pattern each timearray · objects in equal rows
Explanation
To count money, add the values of the notes: 50 LE + 20 LE + 10 LE = 80 LE. An even number can be shared into two equal groups with nothing left, and it ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. Doubling means adding a number to itself: double 14 is 14 + 14 = 28. A pattern follows a rule. In 5, 10, 15, 20 the rule is add 5. An array has equal rows, and repeated addition finds the total: 3 rows of 5 is 5 + 5 + 5 = 15.
Worked examples
Karim has these notes: 100 LE, 50 LE and 20 LE. Add the values: 100 + 50 + 20 = 170 LE.
Find the rule: 6, 12, 18, 24. Each number is 6 more than the one before, so the rule is add 6. The next number is 24 + 6 = 30.
An array of fish has 4 rows with 5 in each row. Repeated addition: 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20 fish.
Class activity
Shop at home. Put price labels of 10, 20 and 50 LE on four things at home (draw play notes if you like). Pick things worth at most 100 LE. Choose a few and add their prices. Then say which total is even and which is odd, and double one price.
Practice
1
How much money is shown?
50 + 50 + 20 + 10 = 130 LE.
2
Karim has 100 LE. He buys a book for 60 LE. How much money is left?
100 − 60 = 40 LE.
3
Is 47 even or odd? What is double 17?
47 is odd. Double 17 is 17 + 17 = 34.
4
Continue the pattern: 40, 35, 30, 25, __, __. What is the rule?
20 and 15. The rule is take away 5.
5
3 rows of 4 flowers. Write the repeated addition and the total.
4 + 4 + 4 = 12 flowers.
