Rows and columns

Discover Mathematics P2: Term 2, Lessons 71–80
GoalName the rows and columns of an array and write an addition for each.
New words
row · objects going across, side to sidecolumn · objects going down, top to bottom3 by 4 array · 3 rows and 4 columns
Explanation

In an array, rows go across and columns go up and down. This array has 3 rows and 4 columns, so we call it a 3 by 4 array. Count the objects in one row and add the rows: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. Count the objects in one column and add the columns: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. The total is 12 both ways. The number of rows tells how many numbers you add when you add the rows. The number of columns tells how many numbers you add when you add the columns.

Worked examples
3 by 4 stars. Rows: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. Columns: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12.
2 by 5 apples. Rows: 5 + 5 = 10. Columns: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10.
4 by 2 cars. Rows: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8. Columns: 4 + 4 = 8.
Class activity

Row and column walk. Find an array in your home or school, such as floor tiles or the windows of a building. Point to a row and say its number. Point to a column and say its number. Write the row addition and the column addition.

Practice
1
How many rows and how many columns does this array have?
2
Write the addition for the rows of the array above.
3
Write the addition for the columns of the same array.
4
An array has 5 rows and 2 columns. Write the addition for the rows and the total.
