Explanation
A portfolio paragraph helps you to see your progress. A good one has four parts. First, say what you learned: This term I learned how to … Second, name your best moment: My best lesson was … because … . Third, name a challenge and how you met it: I found … difficult at first, but practice helped me. Fourth, set a goal for next term: Next term I want to … . Use the past simple for what you did, the present perfect or the present for what you can do now, and will or want to for plans. You may use a second conditional for a wish: If I had more time, I would read more stories in English. Aim for 60 to 80 words, and, if you can, up to 110. Read the paragraph twice: once for ideas and once for spelling and grammar.

Worked examples
This term I learned how to read a text for details, write an email and use conditionals correctly. My best lesson was the one about the STAR plan, because now I know how to answer an interview question. I found articles difficult at first, but practice helped me. If I had more time, I would read more stories in English. Next term I want to write longer paragraphs and speak more confidently. I am proud of my first CV.
Read the model paragraph.
Parts of the model: what I learned (the first sentence), best moment (STAR plan), challenge (articles), a wish with a second conditional (If I had more time, I would read more stories) and a goal (Next term I want to …).
Check the grammar: “I learned” is past simple; “now I know” is present; “I want to write” is verb + to + base verb; “If I had … I would read” is a second conditional.
Look-back table. Unit 1: heritage words and past tenses. Unit 2: kindness, modals and senses. Unit 3: tricks and conditionals. Unit 4: reports, emails and verb patterns. Unit 5: languages and quantifiers. Unit 6: jobs, a CV and articles.
Class activity
My portfolio. Write your own paragraph of 60 to 80 words (up to 110 if you can) called “Looking back at Term 1”. Use all four parts. Then underline one verb in the past simple, one conditional and one verb followed by to. Read it aloud to a grown-up.
Practice
1
Which part of the paragraph names a challenge? (a) My best lesson was … (b) I found … difficult at first, but … (c) Next term I want to …
(b).
2
Write a sentence about what you learned this term, beginning “This term I learned how to …”.
For example: This term I learned how to write a formal email. (Any correct sentence.)
3
Write a second conditional about a wish for next term.
For example: If I had more time, I would read more stories in English.
4
Write a goal for next term with “want to”.
For example: Next term I want to speak more confidently.
5
Count the words in the model paragraph and say if it is between 60 and 80 words.
The model has 79 words (count every word, including I and a); that is between 60 and 80, near the top of the range.
