Pride in a place: gist, detail and opinion
English Secondary 1 Term 1, Unit 1 Lesson 1: pp. 12–14
GoalRead a text about pride in a place and find the main idea, a detail, a fact and an opinion, and a word meaning from context.
New words
heritage · things from the past that a community keeps and valuesneighbourhood · the area around your home and the people who live therecivilization · a society with its own writing, buildings and way of lifepride · a good feeling about something that belongs to you or your communitygist · the general meaning of a textopinion · what a person thinks or believes; it is not a proved fact
Explanation
Start with the gist. Read the title and the first and last sentences, then ask: what is the whole text about? The main idea covers the whole text, but a detail covers only one part. A best summary is shorter than the text, keeps the main idea and does not add new information. For detail questions, find the sentence in the text and check the numbers, names and reasons. To tell a fact from an opinion, ask: can we prove it? A fact can be checked (The fountain is forty years old). An opinion shows a feeling or a judgement and often uses words such as best, beautiful, should or I think (It is the most beautiful fountain). To guess a word from context, read the sentences around it and look for a clue such as an example, a reason or an opposite. Your book has a text on page 12 about pride in a country and its past. Read it after this lesson and try the same skills.
Skill
Question to ask
Main idea

Opinion

Worked examples
Our neighbourhood has an old stone fountain in the middle of the square. Forty years ago the first families of the street built it with their own hands. Every spring, children from the neighbourhood paint the benches around it, and the oldest women bring tea for the workers. Last year a visitor asked why we spend so much time on a small fountain. My grandfather answered that a place we care for teaches us who we are. In my opinion, it is the most beautiful corner of the town. Our heritage is not only in big museums; it is also in small things that people look after together.
Read the text. A grown-up can read it aloud first.
Main idea: the best sentence is “Small shared things, such as a fountain, can be part of a community’s heritage and make people proud.” A sentence about only the benches is a detail, not the main idea.
Fact or opinion? “Forty years ago the first families of the street built it” can be checked, so it is a fact. “It is the most beautiful corner of the town” shows a judgement, so it is an opinion.
Meaning from context: “A place we care for teaches us who we are.” The text then talks about heritage and looking after things together. So neighbourhood means the area around our homes and the people in it, and heritage means things from the past that we keep.
Class activity
Pride in my place. Look at one thing in your street, school or village that people look after together. Write two facts and one opinion about it. Underline the words that show the opinion and tell a grown-up why it is not a fact.
Practice
1
Which is the best title? (a) How a small fountain brings a community together (b) Spring in the town (c) Tea for the workers
(a) How a small fountain brings a community together. It covers the whole text; (b) and (c) are small details.
2
Who built the fountain, and when?
The first families of the street built it forty years ago.
3
Fact or opinion? “The fountain is the best place in town for a picnic.”
Opinion. Best is a judgement; nobody can prove it.
4
Fact or opinion? “Every spring, children paint the benches.”
Fact. We can check it by watching what happens every spring.
5
In the text, what does “heritage” mean? Use your own words.
Things from the past that a community keeps and values, for example an old fountain. (Own words.)
