Review 1: words and meanings

English Secondary 1 Term 1, Review 1, Vocabulary: pp. 48–50
GoalRevise words from Units 1 to 3: synonyms, antonyms, collocations and word forms.
New words
synonym · a word with nearly the same meaningantonym · a word with the opposite meaningcollocation · two or more words that are often used togetherword family · words from the same root, such as protect, protection and protectiverescue · to save someone from a bad situationreliable · able to be trusted
Explanation

Four kinds of word skills appear in a vocabulary review. A synonym has nearly the same meaning: rescue and save. An antonym has the opposite meaning: reliable and unreliable. A collocation is a pair that sounds natural: we say play a role, make a mistake, keep a promise and pay attention, not do a role or make attention. Learn collocations as whole phrases. Word forms belong to the same family: protect (verb), protection (noun), protective (adjective); inspire, inspiration, inspiring; support, support, supportive. To choose a form, look at the gap. After a, an or the, or after an adjective, you need a noun. Before a noun, you often need an adjective. After a subject you need a verb. After a verb of being, such as is, you need an adjective. Check the kind of word before the meaning, and read the whole sentence again with your answer.

Synonymrescue = save; inspire = encourage
Antonymreliable / unreliable; honest / dishonest
Collocationplay a role; make a mistake; keep a promise
Word familyprotect – protection – protective
Worked examples
Choose the word: “The firefighter’s training helps to ___ people.” (rescue / rumour / reliable). A verb is needed after to, and the meaning is to save, so the answer is rescue.
Choose the collocation: “Everyone in a team has to play a ___ .” The collocation is play a role, not play a duty.
Choose the word form: “The ___ of the old bridge took six months.” (restore / restoration / restored). After the, we need a noun, so the answer is restoration.
Antonym: the opposite of reliable is unreliable. We add the prefix un- to many adjectives (unhappy, unfair), but not to all of them, so check each word.
