What positive and negative effects could monopolies have on the economy? Give two of each.
Positive: wider use of new technology, higher labour productivity. Negative: less competition, power to set prices, wealth and influence concentrated in few hands.

Why did relations between Germany and Britain start to become tense? Write three reasons.
1) Germany’s economy grew fast; 2) it had few colonies and was dissatisfied with the division of the world; 3) rivalry for markets and the arms race increased.

Make a table: for Great Britain, France, Germany and the USA fill in the columns “place in industry” and “colonies (large/small)”. From the table, conclude which state had most reason to be dissatisfied with the existing division of the world.
Britain – among the industrial leaders, largest colonies; France – large colonies; Germany – first in Europe in industry but small colonies; USA – first in the world in industry, small colonies but a huge home market. Conclusion: Germany was the most dissatisfied.
