Pancreas and sex glands; regulation of the glands

Textbook: pp. 24–26
GoalExplain the pancreas and sex-gland hormones and regulation through the hypothalamus–pituitary system.
New words
insulin, lowers blood glucose · insulinglucagon, raises blood glucose · glyukagontestosterone · testosteronestrogen · estrogen
Explanation

The pancreas is a mixed gland: it releases digestive enzymes into the intestine and, from the islets of Langerhans, hormones into the blood. Insulin lowers blood glucose: it turns the excess into glycogen stored in the liver; glucagon turns glycogen into glucose and raises blood sugar. If insulin is lacking or does not act well on tissues, blood sugar rises – this is diabetes; only a doctor identifies and treats it, and medicines and diet plans are set by adults and doctors. The sex glands are also mixed: the testes make sperm cells and testosterone, the ovaries make egg cells and estrogen; these hormones bring about secondary sexual characteristics in adolescence. The glands are regulated through the hypothalamus–pituitary system: if stress or the internal environment changes, the hypothalamus activates the pituitary, and the pituitary activates other glands. Long stress harms health, so sleep, activity and talking to someone you trust help.

Worked examples
After sweets the blood sugar rises; insulin helps lower it.
Before an exam the hypothalamus switches on the adrenal medulla through nerves, and adrenaline makes the heart beat fast; if stress lasts long, the hypothalamus also raises adrenal cortex hormones through the pituitary.
Class activity

Pick 4 habits that ease stress (sleep, a walk, breathing practice, talking with a friend) and make a weekly plan. Safety: do exercise suited to your age and under adult supervision.

Practice
1
How do insulin and glucagon affect blood sugar?
2
Why are the pancreas and sex glands called “mixed”?
3
Where are testosterone and estrogen made?
4
How does the hypothalamus–pituitary system work in stress?
