Explanation

The aim is to find how kinetic energy depends on mass and speed. A small ball rolls down an inclined channel, hits a light block at the bottom and pushes it a distance s against friction. The distance s is proportional to the ball’s kinetic energy (the energy is spent as work against friction). 1) Vary the channel’s release height h with the same ball: larger h gives larger speed and larger s. From energy conservation υ² ∝ h, so s ∝ h ∝ υ². 2) Release balls of different masses (steel and glass/wood) from the same h: a larger mass gives a larger s. Measure each case 3 times and average. Work under the teacher’s supervision, with a stopper after the block so the ball cannot roll off.

Worked examples
If s = 2 cm at h = 5 cm and s = 4 cm at h = 10 cm, doubling h doubled s: E_k ∝ h ∝ υ².
If a steel ball with twice the mass pushes the block twice as far from the same h, then E_k ∝ m.
Class activity

Table: № | h (cm) | ball | s (cm). Safety: do not let balls fall off the table; use a stopper; never work without the teacher; never put small balls near your mouth.

Practice
1
What does the block’s displacement show?
2
If h triples, which quantity triples?
3
Three measurements give s = 3.0; 3.3; 2.7 cm. The average (cm)?
4
Why is the ball stopped at the end of the channel?
