Explanation
Write the one-digit number under the two-digit number. Multiply the ones first: write the ones and carry the tens. Then multiply the tens and add the carried tens. For 63 × 8: 3 × 8 = 24 – write 4, carry 2; 6 × 8 = 48, 48 + 2 = 50. Answer: 504.
Worked examples
63 × 8 = 504.
47 × 6: 7 × 6 = 42 (write 2, carry 4); 4 × 6 = 24, 24 + 4 = 28. Answer: 282.
Class activity
“Multiplication stations”: the class is split among 4 stations. Each has a card with a two-digit and a one-digit number. Children multiply in a column and show the answer to a checker.
