Explanation

On 2 July 1992 the first law “On Education” was adopted, setting the principles of state policy and the stages of education. In 1993 a law introduced the Uzbek alphabet based on the Latin script, and from the 1996/1997 school year first-graders learned to read in the Latin alphabet. On 29 August 1997 a new edition of the law and the National Programme for Personnel Training were adopted; the programme was carried out in three stages (1997–2001, 2001–2005 and from 2005) and introduced 9-year general secondary education followed by a 3-year academic lyceum or vocational college. From 2009 a 12-year compulsory education system worked, and a decision in 2017 returned general secondary education to 11 years (grades 1–11) and reorganised admission to lyceums and colleges. A decree of 30 September 2017 created the Ministry of Preschool Education; 1 October, Teachers and Coaches Day, has been marked since 1997. In 2020 a new edition of the law “On Education” was adopted, and at the end of 2022 preschool and school education were brought under one ministry, the Ministry of Preschool and School Education.

Worked examples
Example: the 1997–2009 model was a 9-year school plus a 3-year lyceum/college; from 2017 the model is an 11-year school.
Example: a chronology of education laws — 1992 (first law), 1997 (new edition and national programme), 2020 (new edition).
Class activity

Timeline: the class writes eight changes in the education system from 1992 to 2020 on a paper strip and hangs it on the wall; under each change a personal school experience is added.
