Explanation

In November 1991 a law on the basis of state youth policy was adopted, and in 2016 a new law “On State Youth Policy” was approved, under which persons aged 14 to 30 are counted as young people. Youth organisations were restructured several times: the “Youth Union” became the “Kamolot” foundation in 1996 and the “Kamolot” youth social movement in 2001, and on 30 June 2017 the Youth Union of Uzbekistan was founded and 30 June was set as Youth Day. In 1997 the “Umid” foundation was created to support talented young people studying abroad; to encourage girls’ talent the “Zulfiya” State Prize was established in 1999. In 2005 a privilege was introduced giving extra points in university admission to young people who had completed term military service. Many “years” were dedicated to the young generation (for example 2008 the “Year of Youth” and 2010 the “Year of the Harmoniously Developed Generation”), and in 2017 the Al-Khwarizmi school, with in-depth teaching of exact sciences, was opened.

Worked examples
Example: a 29-year-old citizen counts as young, a 31-year-old does not, because the law sets the age limit at 30.
Example: the “Umid” foundation gives a talented student a grant to study at a foreign university, expecting the student to work in the country after returning.
Class activity

Youth project: groups plan one initiative for young people at their school (for example a reading club) and write the aim, participants and result in three lines.
