Atomic structure: quantum numbers and electron configuration
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Find the total number of s electrons in a calcium atom (Z = 20).
8
2
Calculate the total number of p electrons in a bromine atom (Z = 35).
17
3
Find the number of atomic orbitals in the n = 4 level.
16
4
Show the 2p sublevel of oxygen (Z = 8) in orbital boxes and state the number of unpaired electrons.
2p⁴: one orbital holds a pair and the other two hold one electron each, so there are 2 unpaired electrons.
5
Why was the Bohr model not final, and which idea replaced it? Answer in 2–3 sentences.
The Bohr model puts the electron on an exact orbit, but the electron also has wave properties, so it was replaced by the idea of the atomic orbital, found only with a probability (the quantum model).
