Using the formula bar

Explanation

The cell shows the result, while the real formula inside it is in the formula bar; in this bar a formula can be entered and changed. To the left of the bar are the Name Box (the address of the active cell), then the cancel (✗), enter (✓) and fx buttons. F2 edits inside the cell. In long formulas watch that the brackets match: every bracket that opens must close, or Excel gives a message. “Show Formulas” (Ctrl+`) on the Formulas tab shows formulas in all the cells, and “Evaluate Formula” calculates a complex formula step by step, which helps to find where a mistake is. Advice: write the formula in a cell, not the calculated result – then when a starting number changes, the result updates by itself.

Worked examples
A school trip: B2 is the bus hire 900 000, C2 the ticket price 35 000, D2 the number of students 28, E2 the lunch price 40 000 and F2 the number of teachers 2. G2 gets =B2+C2*D2+E2*(D2+F2): 900 000 + 980 000 + 1 200 000 = 3 080 000 so‘m.
We check =(A1+A2)*A3-A4^2 with Evaluate Formula when A1 = 2, A2 = 3, A3 = 4 and A4 = 3: (2+3) = 5; 5*4 = 20; 3^2 = 9; 20 – 9 = 11. The steps show the value of each part of the formula.
Class activity

“The bracket inspector”: the teacher writes 5 long formulas, some with a missing bracket; students find the mistake in the formula bar and correct it.
