Modern ways of creating applications

Textbook: pp. 79–83
GoalNames the stages in the development of programming (machine code, assembler, high-level languages, structured, object-oriented, visual and generic programming) in order and explains where Delphi fits.
New words
assembler: a language with short names for processor commands · assemblertranslator: a program that converts program text into machine code · translyatorobject-oriented programming: programs built from objects with properties and methods · obyektli dasturlashvisual programming: building an application by placing ready objects in a window · vizual dasturlash
Explanation

The first programs were written as numeric sequences of processor commands, that is machine code, and finding a mistake in them was very hard. Assembler gave the commands short names and made the work easier, but a program still depended on one type of processor. In high-level languages the writing came closer to human language and a translator converted the text into machine code; in structured programming a big task was divided into procedures and functions, so several programmers could work on one program. Object-oriented programming joined data and the methods that process it in one object: for example, a window object has a width and a height (properties) and open and close (methods). In visual programming ready objects (a button, a label, an input field) are placed in a window with the mouse and their properties are set, and the environment itself writes a large part of the program text. The next stage is generic programming: one algorithm or method is written so that it works with different kinds of objects and data (for example, one “area” command for a triangle, a circle and a rectangle). Delphi is a visual environment and its language is Object Pascal; Delphi is now produced by Embarcadero, and a free alternative is Lazarus (based on Free Pascal).

Worked examples
The order: machine code → assembler → high-level languages (with a translator) → structured programming → object-oriented programming → visual programming → generic programming. Each next stage made the programmer’s work easier and allowed work in large teams.
A team is creating one application: one programmer writes the entry window, the second the calculation procedure and the third the report. Such division is typical of the structured programming stage. Placing a ready button on a window and changing its Caption property is an example of visual programming.
Class activity

“The chain of stages”: six cards (machine code, assembler, high-level, structured, object-oriented, visual) are shuffled; a group puts them in the right order in 1 minute and says one sentence about each.

Practice
1
At which stage were short names given to machine code?
2
What are the width and height of a window object in a program called?
3
Why can a programmer use a ready button object without writing it?
4
What does a translator do and why is it needed?
