Explanation

In this practical lesson a complete piece of work is made from the “Students” table (StudentID, FullName, Class, Mark). First build the table with 8 invented records; do not enter real names or phone numbers. Then create a form with Form Wizard, enter three new records in it and use Find to locate a given name. Next create a report in Report Wizard: group by Class and sort Mark in descending order. Check the page in Print Preview and save the report as a PDF file with External Data – PDF or XPS: this saves paper and the file opens the same on any device. At the end check the sum and the mean of Mark in the table with the Totals row.

Worked examples
Marks: 5, 4, 3, 5, 5, 4, 3, 5. The sum is 34, the count is 8, the mean is 34/8 = 4.25. In descending order: 5, 5, 5, 5, 4, 4, 3, 3 – in the sorted report the first four rows hold 5.
If three new students are added through the form, the table has 8+3 = 11 records. Saving the report as PDF does not change the table and form data: it is only a copy of the report.
Class activity

“Checking the result”: a pair finds the sum with Totals in the table, compares it with the total in the report and looks for the reason if there is a difference.

Practice
1
Which tab is used to save a report as PDF?
2
If the marks are 4, 5, 3, 4, what is the sum?
3
If the marks are in descending order 5, 5, 4, 3, which mark is in the first row?
4
Why should real names and phone numbers not be entered in a practical lesson?
