Eight reasons digital transformation matters

ICT Prep 1 Term 1, Lesson 2: pp. 11–12
GoalGive the eight reasons why digital transformation matters, with an example for each.
New words
competitiveness · staying as good as others, so that people keep choosing youdecision-making · choosing what to do by using facts and informationdata · facts and numbers that have been collectedresources · things that work uses up, such as energy, paper, money and time
Explanation

Organisations and companies need digital transformation for eight main reasons. One: more efficiency and output, because work flows better, mistakes are fewer, and time, effort and money are saved. Two: better services and products for customers. Three: more sales and income, because a business can reach new places and new customers. Four: innovation, because new tools bring new ideas and new products. Five: staying competitive by keeping up with the latest technology. Six: better decisions, because the right data and facts arrive at the right time. Seven: less use of energy and other resources, for example less paper. Eight: new jobs, because new kinds of work appear. The table gives a school or shop example for each reason. Do not try to learn the list by heart. Ask yourself in each case: what gets better, and for whom?

ReasonExample (invented)
1 Efficiencyattendance is counted automatically, with fewer mistakes
2 Better servicepupils see their results as soon as they are ready
3 New customersa basket shop shows its goods to buyers in other cities
4 Innovationteachers try a new kind of quiz
5 Competitivenessa bakery that takes orders by message keeps up with others nearby
6 Better decisionsthe canteen sees what sells and orders the right amount
7 Fewer resourcesreports are sent online, so less paper is used
8 New jobssomeone is needed to look after the school’s online system
Worked examples
0204060604515sandwichjuicecakesold last week (invented)
The school canteen counts what it sold last week and keeps the numbers in a table. It sold 60 sandwiches, 45 juices and 15 cakes. Sandwiches sell most and cakes least, so the canteen bakes fewer cakes. This is a decision made from data.
Mina’s aunt makes baskets. A picture of her baskets is shown online, and a buyer in another city sends an order. She reached a new customer and earned more. Other basket makers now show their work online too, so she keeps trying to improve her designs. That is competitiveness.
website testerchecks pagesworks well
Seif’s cousin works as a website tester. He checks that online pages work correctly before people use them. When his grandfather was young this kind of job did not exist. New technology creates new jobs.
Class activity

Make eight paper strips. Write one reason on each: efficiency, services, customers, ideas, competition, decisions, resources, jobs. Choose a place you know, such as a shop or a clinic. Pick three strips and write one sentence each about how going digital could help that place. Ask a family member whether they agree.

Practice
1
Which reason is about reaching buyers in new places?
2
Look at the canteen chart. Which food sold most, and how many more than the cakes?

3
Name two resources that digital transformation can help to save.
