ICT Prep 1 Term 1, Lesson 2: pp. 11–12
GoalExplain digital transformation with a before-and-after example.
New words
digital transformation · bringing digital technology into every part of how work is doneefficiency · doing a job well with little time, effort and costdigital service · a service that you ask for and receive through the internet or an appinnovation · a new idea or a new way of doing something
Explanation

Digital transformation means bringing digital technology into every part of how an organisation works. The aim is to work better, to spend less, and to offer products and services in new or improved ways. Think of asking for a paper certificate. In the paper way, a person goes to an office, stands in a queue, fills in a form by hand and comes back another day. In the digital way, the person sends the request through the internet, can check how it is going, and receives the answer without standing in a queue. The work itself has not disappeared. The way it is done has changed. Notice that buying devices is not enough. If a school buys new devices but still does every job on paper, nothing has been transformed. Digital transformation is about changing the steps of the work, not only about owning machines.

Worked examples
Mariam’s school library lends books with paper cards. A pupil waits at the desk while the librarian writes a name on a card and searches a box of cards. When the library keeps a list on a computer, the librarian types the book’s name and sees at once whether it is on the shelf.

Youssef’s uncle has a small bakery. He used to write the day’s orders in a notebook and sometimes lost track of them. Now he keeps the orders in a list on a computer. He sees every order clearly, and customers can ask for bread with a message.

Seif’s school buys ten new phones, but the teachers still write every mark and every list by hand. Is this digital transformation? No. The devices are there, but the work has not changed. It would be transformed if marks were typed once and shared with the parents through a service.
Class activity

Pick one task done on paper at home or at school, such as taking attendance or borrowing a book. Draw two columns on a page, “Paper way” and “Digital way”, and write the steps of each. Underline the step that digital technology makes faster. You do not need a device; you only imagine.
