Four stages of a project: start, plan, do, evaluate

ICT Prep 1 Term 1, Lesson 10: pp. 99–109
GoalName the four stages of a project and say what happens in each.
New words
project · a piece of work with a goal, done step by step over some timestage · one part of a project, which comes before or after anothergoal · what we want to find out or makeevaluate · to judge how good the work is and what to improve
Explanation

A good project is not done all at once. It has four stages. Start: we choose the topic and write the goal in one sentence. Plan: we decide what questions to answer, where to find the information, who does what, and how much time we have. Do: we find the information, make the text, table, chart or slides, and bring them together. Evaluate: we look back at the work and ask whether it reached the goal, what went well and what to improve next time. The stages follow each other, but a good team can go back. If the evaluation shows a missing part, the team returns to “do”. Let us follow an invented project: “What grows in our school garden?”

Worked examples
start: the goalone sentence
Start: the class writes the goal, “Find out and show what plants grow in the school garden.” One clear sentence tells the team what the end will look like.
AB
1PlantPlants in the bed (made up)
2Beans12
3Mint8
4Tomatoes5
Do: the team counts invented plants in three beds: 12 beans, 8 mint and 5 tomatoes. The total is 12 + 8 + 5 = 25 plants. The numbers are made up for practice.
Evaluate: the team asks whether the goal was reached. Yes, we know what grows. But no one wrote where the facts came from. The team goes back to “do” and adds the sources. Going back is not failure; it is how work improves.
Class activity

Pick an invented class project, for example “our class book corner”. On four big paper boxes, write start, plan, do and evaluate. Under each box write two things the class will do. Then swap papers with a partner and add one thing they forgot.

Practice
1
Name the four stages in order.
2
In which stage do we write the goal?
3
In which stage do we decide who does what?
4
Beans 12, mint 8, tomatoes 5. How many plants in all?
