Review: e-mail, the cloud, meetings and databases

ICT Prep 1 Term 1, Lessons 1–10: Review
GoalReview e-mail, the cloud, meetings and databases with new tasks.
New words
attachment · a file sent together with an e-mail messagecloud storage · keeping files on servers far away, reachable over the internetdatabase · an organised collection of data kept in tablesquery · a question asked to a database
Explanation

E-mail sends messages and files, but it also has risks: a message may ask for a password, or push us to open an attachment from a stranger. We never share a password, and we ask a grown-up when unsure. The cloud keeps files on distant servers, so we can open them from another device after signing in, as long as we have a connection. A video meeting joins people who are in different places: we keep manners, such as listening and muting when we are not speaking. A database keeps data in tables of records and fields, a form shows one record at a time, and a query asks a question. Practise with an invented e-mail and a small pupils’ table. We use only invented names.

TopicKey point
E-mailnever share a password; ask a grown-up
Cloudfiles on far servers; sign in to open
Meetingslisten, mute when not speaking
Databasetables, forms, queries
Worked examples
prize e-mailasks for a password
Spot the risk. An invented e-mail says: “You won a prize! Send us your password to get it.” The risk is that it asks for a password. We do not reply, we do not click, and we tell a grown-up.
Order what happens when we save a file to the cloud: we save the file, it travels over the internet, a far server stores it, and later we sign in on another device and open it.

Read the table and write a query in words. “Show the Name of pupils whose Class is 1A and whose Mark is more than 13.” Mina has 1A and 15, so she appears. Omar has 12, so he does not.
Class activity

Write a short invented e-mail with one risky sign (for example it asks for a password) and swap it with a partner. Ask: what is the risk and what should we do? Then draw a four-record table of invented classmates and write one query in words for it.

Practice
1
An invented e-mail from a stranger has an attachment and says “open it now!” What do you do?
2
Put in order: far server stores it, we save the file, it travels online.
3
In the pupils’ table, how many records have Class 1A?
4
Error hunt: “A query deletes the records it does not show.” Correct it.
