Dream jobs: listening and going to
Listen to a short text about Heba, who has a talent for drawing. Talent is a natural skill, effort is the hard work you put in, and a goal is what you want to reach. To talk about plans we use be going to: I am going to study engineering. She is going to join a club. For a prediction with evidence we also use going to: Look at the clouds! It is going to rain. Form: am, is or are + going to + short verb. Negative: I’m not going to give up. Questions: Are you going to join? Yes, I am. No, I’m not. With will we say quick decisions or opinions: I will help you. For plans, going to is better.
| Use | Example |
|---|---|
| plan | I am going to join a drawing club. |
| negative | She is not going to give up. |
| question | Are you going to study tonight? |
| prediction with evidence | Look at the sky! It is going to rain. |
My cousin Heba has a talent for drawing, but she knows that talent is not enough. Her goal is to draw the pictures for a children’s book. Every day she makes an effort: she practises for one hour. Her mother says, “Look at the clouds, Heba. It is going to rain, so draw inside today.” Heba laughs and takes her pencils to the table. She is going to show her drawings to her teacher next week.
What are you going to do on Saturday?
I am going to visit my grandfather. Look at the clouds! It is going to rain, so I will take an umbrella.
Plan and predict. Write three plans for next week with going to. Then go to the window and make two predictions about the weather or the street, with evidence: Look at … It is going to … .
