Chest models and how fish breathe

Science P6: Term 1, Chapter 2, pp. 18–23
GoalShow with a model how the chest moves in breathing, and say how fish breathe.
New words
diaphragm · the sheet of muscle under the lungs that helps us breatheribs · the curved bones that protect the chestgills · body parts that let fish take oxygen from water
Explanation

When you breathe in, the muscle under your lungs, the diaphragm, moves down and your ribs move up and out. The chest gets bigger and air flows in. When you breathe out, the diaphragm moves up, the ribs move back, the chest gets smaller and air flows out. You can feel this by putting a hand on your chest and taking a deep breath. You can measure it too: a tape around the chest is a bit longer when you breathe in. A bottle and balloon model can show the idea, but an adult must cut the bottle. Fish live in water. Dissolved oxygen in water passes into their blood through gills, and carbon dioxide leaves through the gills too. Fish do not have lungs like ours.

Worked examples
ChestTape reading
after breathing out70 cm
after breathing in73 cm
Youssef measures his chest with a soft tape: 70 cm after breathing out and 73 cm after a deep breath in. The chest got 3 cm bigger when he breathed in.
bottle as chestlung
In the bottle model the balloon inside stands for the lung and a balloon sheet pulled over the bottom stands for the diaphragm. Pulling the sheet down makes the balloon fill, like breathing in. An adult cuts the bottle.
fishoxygen in water
A goldfish opens and closes its mouth and moves its gills. Water passes over the gills, and oxygen in the water goes into the fish’s blood.
Class activity

Hand on the chest. With a grown-up, put one hand on your chest and one on your tummy. Breathe in slowly three times and feel which part rises. Then measure your chest with a soft tape after breathing out and after breathing in. Write the two numbers and subtract.

Practice
1
What does the diaphragm do when you breathe in?
2
How do fish take oxygen from the water?
3
A tape reads 68 cm after breathing out and 71 cm after breathing in. What is the difference?
4
In the model, what does the balloon stand for?
