Review: solutions and metals

Science P6: Term 1, Chapters 1–10
GoalReview acidic, neutral and alkaline solutions, evaporation and metals with new questions.
New words
litmus paper · paper that changes colour to show if a solution is acidic or alkalinealkaline · turns red litmus paper bluenew substance · a material with different properties from the one it came from
Explanation

Last set. Litmus paper sorts solutions: acidic ones turn blue litmus red, alkaline ones turn red litmus blue, and neutral ones change neither. Lemon juice and vinegar are acidic, soapy water is alkaline, sugar water and salt water are neutral. When a solution evaporates, dissolved solids such as salt stay in the dish as crystals, but a dissolved gas, such as the carbon dioxide in sparkling water, escapes. Some metals bubble in a strong dilute acid, which gives off hydrogen. Afterwards, the dried solid is a new substance: dull, and it no longer bubbles. Gold stays bright because it does not react easily, and old metals can be recycled. In a lab we wear goggles, never taste, waft smells and tell the teacher about spills.

Worked examples
Farida’s dish of salt water dries in the sun and leaves white crystals. Her bottle of sparkling water left open goes flat with nothing left behind.
Seif says: because iron rusts, it is a worse metal than gold. Gold stays bright because it does not react easily, but iron is cheap and strong and is used very widely.

Class activity

Test card. Make a card for each of these words: acidic, alkaline, neutral, evaporate, new substance, recycle. On the back, write a one-line meaning and an example. Ask a family member to read a meaning so you can say the word.

Practice
1
Soapy water turns red litmus paper blue. Which group is it?
2
What is left when salt water evaporates in a dish?
3
The white solid left from reacted aluminium: is it aluminium again?
4
Give one lab safety rule.
