Tenths, hundredths and place value
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Write 5/10, 8/100 and 35/100 as decimals.
5/10 = 0.5, 8/100 = 0.08, 35/100 = 0.35.
2
Write 0.6 and 0.06 as fractions. Which one is bigger?
0.6 = 6/10 = 60/100 and 0.06 = 6/100. 0.6 is bigger: it is ten times as big.
3
Write 9.47 in expanded form and in words.
9 + 0.4 + 0.07. Nine and forty-seven hundredths.
4
A ribbon is 1.3 metres long. Write the length as a mixed number of tenths.
1.3 = 1 + 3/10 = 1 3/10 metres.
5
Colour the hundred grid: how many squares must you colour to show 0.4? And to show 0.04? Explain.
0.4 = 40/100, so 40 squares (4 columns). 0.04 = 4/100, so only 4 squares.
