The complex number a + bi: real and imaginary parts, solving x² = −k and equality of two complex numbers

Mathematics Sec 1 Term 1, Unit 1, Lesson 1
GoalWrite numbers in the form a + bi, solve equations such as x² = −k and use the equality of two complex numbers.
New words
complex number · a number a + bi where a and b are realreal part / imaginary part · a is the real part and b is the imaginary part (b, not bi)pure imaginary · a complex number with a = 0 and b ≠ 0
Explanation

A complex number is any number of the form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers. The number a is its real part and b is its imaginary part (note that it is b, not bi). If b = 0 the number is just the real number a; if a = 0 and b ≠ 0 it is pure imaginary. So every real number is also complex: the sets N, Z, Q and R all sit inside the set of complex numbers. Complex numbers let us solve x² = −k for k > 0: x = ±√k × i. For example x² = −16 gives x = ±4i, and you can check (4i)² = 16 × (−1) = −16. Two complex numbers are equal exactly when their real parts are equal and their imaginary parts are equal: a + bi = c + di means a = c and b = d. This turns one complex equation into two ordinary equations, which is how we find unknown x and y.

Worked examples
Solve 4x² + 100 = 36. 4x² = 36 − 100 = −64, so x² = −16 and x = ±4i. Check: 4 × (4i)² + 100 = 4 × (−16) + 100 = 36 ✓.
Solve 25x² + 49 = 0. x² = −49/25, so x = ± 7i/5. Check: (7i/5)² = 49 × (−1)/25 = −49/25 ✓.
Find x and y if (x + 2y) + (3x − y)i = 7 + 7i. Equal real parts: x + 2y = 7. Equal imaginary parts: 3x − y = 7. From the second, y = 3x − 7. Put it in the first: x + 6x − 14 = 7, so x = 3 and y = 2. Check: 3 + 4 = 7 and 9 − 2 = 7 ✓.
Class activity

Real or imaginary? Write five complex numbers of your own on paper, one with b = 0, one with a = 0 and three others. Under each give its real part and its imaginary part.

Practice
1
Write the real and imaginary parts of 6 − 4i and of 9i.
2
Solve 2x² + 75 = 25.
